Tom Callard -Tom is a Firefighter. He is part of a task force leaving Friday 9/30 for Louisiana on Amtrak. They will man fire vehicles already down there from Illinois. They will work from a base camp at Girod & Carondelet in New Orleans. The shift is 24 hours on, 24 hours off. He's been told by men already down there, that on the days off they go out to homes of New Orleans Firefighters and help them clean up. It sounds like they will only be gone 2 - 3 weeks...so he's still hoping to make the reunion. I told him our thoughts & prayers go with them....
Submitted 9/29/05
Tom has sent in several photos, that'll be posted a.s.a.p. Tom returned from New Orleans on October 15th. Pictures cannot show how bad some areas are, but Bourbon Street is doing fine. His engine crew had a Mt. Prospect driver, a FF from Hoffman Estates, a New Orleans firefighter and himself from Rolling Meadows. They used an Oak Park engine and had National Guard from Illinois with them. Over 80% of New Orleans firefighters lost their home. They had 111 firefighters from Illinois and 75 from New York. It was an honor to work alongside these men. I told him we're grateful that he went and grateful that he's back safely!
